Quinzee - Day 40

Further into the depths I go.
The chamber is getting more spacious. I'm considering a second door for airflow/escape/ease of snow removal purposes.
At the moment my primary tool is a lightweight metal avalanche shovel from my ski touring days — very strong, sharp and easy on the arms.
Safety is beginning to become a consideration as I cut deeper into the cavern. The snow is very dense and well-bonded though I'm considering an internal column in the centre of the cavern to bear some of the weight of the ceiling. It could be a cool decorative element as well.

Push some 8-10 inch sticks from the outside all around the surface. Dig out the inside until you meet he sticks = 8-10" walls. Then close it up and leave a candle burning in it overnight = iced ceiling and walls. You should be able to walk on top of it after that.

Vern: It's a high-powered LED head lamp made by Black Diamond. Yes it's very bright.

Garth: I've been using a few sticks here and there as guides for wall/ceiling depth. In some places it's way too hard packed to jam a stick in — a good problem to have.
The candle is a good idea. I was thinking about just using a spray bottle. Thanks for the tips, now I gotta invite you to the party!
